SOFT TISSUE INJURY

Surrounding structures of the knee can become painful for a variety of reasons including sudden increase in the demands placed on the knee (increased exercise), poor biomechanics, and over-training.

This may result in tendonitis, bursitis or impingement.

Initial management in conjunction with a physiotherapist is:

  • Relative rest of the joint

  • Local measures to decrease pain and swelling

  • Strengthening exercises for the knee and core muscles

  • Retraining of proper biomechanics

  • Graduated return to activity

Rarely surgical intervention is required if other treatment modalities are ineffective.
