SOFT TISSUE LACERATION

Laceration of the soft tissue occasionally requires surgical intervention.  The indications for this include:

  • Large lacerations

  • Contaminated lacerations

  • Suspected injury to underlying tendons, nerves or vessels

  • Laceration that penetrates a joint

What's involved?

  • The procedure involves exploration of the extent of the wound and debridement (cleaning) of any contaminated tissue

  • Any important damaged structures are repaired during the procedure

  • Often surgical management is the most reliable method to prevent subsequent infection of the laceration

  • The length of hospital stay is usually 1 night
